Summary

This case-based discussion by an expert panel, originally presented at a North European webinar in October 2025, explores the importance of early identification of presymptomatic T1D.

Risk factors for T1D are highlighted, including the association of T1D with other autoimmune diseases, and the increased risk in relatives of people with T1D vs. the general population.

Consensus recommendations for early screening are discussed, including optimal screening timings in children and adolescents, as well as suggestions for screening approaches in adults.

The importance of staging and suggestions for long-term monitoring of individuals at different T1D stages are also explored, along with advice for effectively supporting affected families.
