Daniel Agardh

Dr. Daniel Agardh is a physician and researcher specializing in pediatric autoimmune diseases, with a primary focus on screening and prevention of celiac disease and type 1 diabetes. He earned his medical degree from Lund University in 1997, and completed his PhD in 2006, investigating tissue transglutaminase autoantibodies in childhood celiac disease. He is currently a senior consultant at Skåne University Hospital and a senior lecturer at Lund University, where he leads the Diabetes and Celiac Unit.
Dr. Agardh’s research focuses on early detection and prevention of autoimmune diseases, particularly through population-based screening and risk stratification. He has been a key investigator in international studies, including the TEDDY study and the TRIAD study, which examine genetic and environmental factors influencing disease onset. His work has contributed to the development of screening protocols for celiac disease and type 1 diabetes, with the aim of identifying at-risk individuals before clinical onset.
Beyond research, Dr. Agardh has played an active role in shaping clinical guidelines and he has been involved in international collaborations to improve early diagnosis and disease prevention strategies. His contributions continue to advance public health approaches for autoimmune disease screening in pediatric populations.
