Riitta Veijola

Professor of Pediatrics​, University of Oulu and Oulu University Hospital, Oulu, Finland

Professor Riitta Veijola is a specialist in pediatrics and pediatric endocrinology. She spent her postdoctoral period at the University of Cambridge, UK. Upon her return to Finland, her research expanded to national and international prospective birth cohort studies. Professor Veijola chairs the Finnish Type 1 Diabetes Prediction and Prevention (DIPP) study and leads the Diabetes Research Laboratory at the University of Oulu. Professor Veijola has also participated in several international studies: The Environmental Determinant of Diabetes in the Young (TEDDY study) funded by NIH, The Trial to Reduce IDDM in the Genetically at Risk (TRIGR study) funded by the NIH, and the European Commission-funded Innovative Medicines Initiative 2 (IMI-2) projects Translational Approaches to Disease Modifying Therapy of Type 1 Diabetes: An Innovative Approach Towards Understanding and Arresting Type 1 Diabetes (INNODIA and INNODIA HARVEST). Professor Veijola has published over 450 articles and has more than 16,000 citations. She received The Swedish Child Diabetes Foundation’s Johnny Ludvigsson Prize for excellent research in childhood and adolescent diabetes in 2016, and The Knud Lundbæk Award from the Scandinavian Society for the Study of Diabetes in 2023. She became a member of the Finnish Academy of Science and Letters in 2021.
