Advancing Models of Care for People with Type 1 Diabetes

Leading T1D experts discuss supportive care pathways, psychosocial support, and new models of care for people at risk of, or diagnosed with, type 1 diabetes.

Learning Objectives

  • Understand the importance of pathways that provide education and psychosocial support for people at risk of, or diagnosed with, type 1 diabetes
  • Recognize the roles of both clinicians and families in managing type 1 diabetes across all stages

Summary

This video discusses the reframing of type 1 diabetes (T1D) as a progressive, detectable disease and the need to build care pathways that can educate, support, and reduce the risk of diabetic ketoacidosis. Prof Chantal Mathieu emphasizes that early-stage T1D can be identified and managed before clinical diagnosis and symptom onset. Jaivir Pall highlights the role of the wider care team in addressing psychosocial needs, including peer mentors, family members, dietitians, and nurses. Prof Francesco Giorgino calls for new organizational models to identify, follow up, and support people at high risk of T1D, with greater collaboration across specialties.
