A Guide to T1D Screening Tests

A guide to autoimmune type 1 diabetes (T1D) screening tests.

Learning Objectives

  • Highlight that autoantibody screening can identify people with T1D
  • To guide the viewer through the different options available for blood sample collection and analysis

Summary

Screening for the presence of two or more islet autoantibodies can identify people with autoimmune type 1 diabetes. Self-collected capillary blood samples offer a convenient and minimally invasive way for individuals to provide blood samples from home or in the clinic for autoantibody screening. Screening tests are available through research studies, select clinical programs, and from diagnostic laboratories.

Several methods are available for testing autoimmune type 1 diabetes autoantibodies. These include RBA (the current gold standard), ECL, ELISA, ADAP, and LIPS. Each offer their own distinct advantages and limitations.
