This video examines why distinguishing adult-onset type 1 diabetes (T1D) from type 2 diabetes (T2D) matters, and the opportunities to screen individuals with suspected autoimmune T1D. Prof Colin Dayan explains how identifying adult-onset T1D is challenging in practice, and why accurate classification is important. He goes on to highlight gestational diabetes mellitus as a setting in which underlying T1D autoimmunity should be considered. Prof Francesco Giorgino outlines features that should prompt consideration of T1D autoantibody testing in adults, including younger age, low body mass index, poor response to dietary restriction, and a personal or family history of autoimmune disease.
