The Growing Global Burden of T1D – ATTD 2026

The video discusses the rising T1D burden: Adult-onset misclassification, familial risk, and autoimmune comorbidities impacting diagnosis and management.

Learning Objectives

  • Recognize the growing burden of T1D
  • Understand the risk of misclassification in adults with T1D
  • Identify autoimmune comorbidities that are associated with T1D

Summary

At ATTD 2026, Dr Sanjoy Dutta, explores the growing burden of T1D, highlighting that adults account for a significant proportion of new diagnoses; approximately 40% are initially misclassified as T2D and treated unsuccessfully for years. While familial T1D risk is elevated, most cases of T1D arise in individuals with no known family history. Several autoimmune conditions, including celiac disease and Hashimoto's thyroiditis, are associated with T1D. Long-term, people with T1D face a higher risk of complications compared to the general population.
