Identifying Type 1 Diabetes in Adults
Dr Jeremy Pettus explains how to identify type 1 diabetes (T1D) in adults, avoid misclassification as type 2 diabetes (T2D), and interpret islet autoantibodies (IAbs) and C-peptide to support diagnosis and staging.
Learning Objectives
- Recognize why T1D can be misclassified as T2D in adults
- Describe how IAb testing supports identification and staging
- Explain how C-peptide can complement IAb testing when classification is unclear
Summary
Dr Jeremy Pettus explains that T1D can be diagnosed at any age and is often misclassified as T2D in adults. Using a case study, he outlines when to suspect autoimmune T1D and how to test for islet autoantibodies (IAbs) (e.g., IAA, IA-2A, GADA and, ZnT8A). He reviews the stages of T1D, including Stage 2 with dysglycemia, as well as why early identification can reduce risk and support earlier education and monitoring. He also describes how C-peptide can complement IAb testing to support classification when unclear.
