Early Detection of T1D: Fundamentals of Implementing a T1D Screening Program

Expert interviews discussing the fundamentals of T1D screening programs

Learning Objectives

  • Educate on the key requirements, first steps and barriers to engagement for setting up a type 1 diabetes (T1D) screening program

Summary

Essential steps to be taken before starting a T1D screening program include already knowing the study endpoints, knowing who will follow the people that will be diagnosed, and where people with early-stage T1D (with two or more autoantibodies) will be monitored. It should also be considered how people with negative test results can be recalled.

The biggest barrier to screening is communication and getting people to engage in routine monitoring. Patients may not feel different or have any obvious symptoms. It's important to minimize the burden in those presymptomatic stages of T1D, so to not accidentally burn families out on medical care before they even need insulin.
