Autoantibody Screening Can Detect Presymptomatic Autoimmune T1D in Children

Using a sample pediatric case study (Rosa), this video describes how autoantibody screening can enable early detection of presymptomatic T1D, providing a window of opportunity to prepare for clinical diagnosis

Learning Objectives

  • Understand how autoantibody screening can detect presymptomatic autoimmune T1D in children

Summary

Rosa is an 8-year-old child with presymptomatic autoimmune T1D, but neither she nor her family know this yet. Let’s suppose she participates in a screening initiative. It will look for specific autoantibodies against IA-2, IAA, zinc transporter, and GAD. If you have at least two of those, your long-term risk of type 1 diabetes is 100%. Rosa tests positive for GAD and IA-2 antibodies. This will be confirmed with a second independent sample. Then we will provide education, psychological assessment, and support. If she is ultimately diagnosed with early type 1 diabetes, she will start metabolic monitoring at home and in the lab, to ensure she doesn't develop DKA.
