Exploring the Etiology of Autoimmune Type 1 Diabetes

Overview of the factors playing a role in the etiology of T1D.

Learning Objectives

  • Understand the etiology underlying the pathophysiology of T1D

Summary

Type 1 diabetes is a chronic autoimmune disease with a complex multifactorial etiology. It is thought to be driven by genetic and environmental factors. Some genetic variants increase the risk of type 1 diabetes, which can be classified as HLA and non-HLA genes. Susceptibility to developing autoimmunity is greatest in the first two years of life. Certain potential environmental factors can trigger autoimmunity. Environmental factors in combination with genetic susceptibility may result in autoreactive T cells attacking susceptible beta cells in the pancreas resulting in T1D.
